Almera may be a bit bland yet offers huge value.
Similar to its main rival the Toyota Corolla Quest the Nissan Almera might seem a bit old school to some, but it still contains all the necessary essentials to ensure that as a family saloon it offers great value. Considering what buyers can purchase at this price point the Almera actually makes a lot of sense, especially if status and modern styling are not priorities on your shopping list, but rather value and space.
Background and condition of vehicle:
- With a mere 23 000km on the clock our Almera on test certainly seemed as good as new.
- The bodywork as well as the interior seemed flawless, while even the carpet in the boot appeared like new.
- The alloy wheels were scuffmark free, while the 185/65R15 tyres still displayed lots of tread depth and certainly will not need replacing soon.
Performance and Economy:
- Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre four cylinder 16-valve engine that produces 73 Kilowatts of maximum power accompanied by 139Nm of torque.
- Power is fed through the front wheels mated to a four-speed automatic box.
- By today’s standards the engine power outputs and only four ratios’ in the automatic box certainly seems a generation or so behind and yes it probably is.
- Nonetheless the drivetrain performs admirably, especially when compared to other budget offerings at this price point.
- Overall performance therefore proved very much respectable at the price.
- Fuel economy is decent too with a combined quoted figure of 6.3-litre per 100km.
How does it drive?
- The Almera feels solid on the road for a car of its stature.
- It glides over smooth surfaces and is effective at ironing out coarser roads that can create vibrations and road noise in some of its competitors, especially at this price point.
- Potholes and surface joins can be felt through the chassis, but the suspension does a reasonable job overall of maintaining a refined and planted feel.
- The power steering was light and effortless to use, which is especially great in and around town.
- The steering does feel a bit lifeless at times, although the Almera reacts well to the driver’s steering inputs.
- Decent on-road dynamics are accompanied by a safety package that included ABS braking with EBD and dual-airbags.
Inside the vehicle:
- Clearly designed to keep costs down soft-touch plastics are nowhere to be found inside the cabin of the Almera.
- This said the hard plastic trim utilized did prove to be durable and for the most part scratch resistance from what we could notice after 23000km of mileage so far.
- We should also bear in mind that hard plastics are common amongst just about all of the vehicles at this price point.
- The cabin lay-out is straight forward and practical, although clearly not as high tech as some newer models on the market.
- Standard features included the following:
- Air-conditioning - Electric windows
- Central Locking - Bluetooth connectivity
- Radio with CD-Player - USB Port
- On-Board trip computer - Dual Airbags and ABS Braking
- 12V Connector - Full size spare wheel
- Park distance control (Rear) - Multi-function steering wheel
- Remote boot release - Rear air vents
Space and Practicality:
- The Nissan Almera is most certainly a very spacious budget saloon offering more rear-seat legroom than any other car at this price point.
- It also offers a massive 490-litre boot.
- Plenty of little storage spaces and cupholders are also to be found inside the cabin.
Summary:
- Although not as attractive as some newer models on the market and still utilizing some older tech the Nissan Almera offers impressive spaciousness and comfort for its budget pricing.
- The remainder of the 3-year/90 000km service plan and 6-year/150 000km warranty should also create a lot of peace of mind with this used car purchase.
- Although somewhat old-school the Nissan Almera does offer massive value for money, especially when compared to what buyers could actually purchase at this particular price point.
- Comfort and spaciousness
- Value for money
