2023 Nissan Z unveiled

Nissan’s all-new Z represents an approachable sports car for the modern age, with an unmatched 50-plus year heritage and global fan base.

This modern iteration of the iconic Japanese sports car retains its authenticity as a pure sports car by keeping drivers connected to the road while utilising the latest modern technologies to ensure the driver and passenger remain connected to life.

The original 240Z was a sports car for enthusiasts built by enthusiasts and that spirit continues today with the launch of the latest incarnation of the Z.

Iconic design

The 2023 Z boasts a fresh look and sleek exterior design while paying respect to its rich lineage. The long bonnet and short boot are fundamentally Z and the silhouette is strikingly similar when viewed from the side. The latest technology was utilised to streamline the design while incorporated LED lighting gives dimension without the addition of unnecessary elements.

Continuing the uncluttered look are flush mounted door handles and an ultra thin rear hatch. The rear blister fenders direct airflow past the horizontal rear panel. Rear taillights incorporate modern LED technology into a design reminiscent of the Z32 300ZX.

Inside story

Just like the exterior, the interior blends modern technology with vintage Z touches. The centre console features three analogue gauges and an eight-inch touchscreen audio display.

All information in the 12.3-inch customisable dashboard display has been arranged to help the driver grasp it at a glance, including the redline shift point at the 12 o’clock position.

Under the bonnet

Powering the 2023 Z is a 3.0- litre V6 twin turbo engine that boasts 300kW and 475Nm from 1 600rpm, offering the best of both worlds in terms of power and responsiveness. To achieve the increases in power, torque and responsiveness, small diameter turbochargers were adopted as well as turbo speed sensors to ensure that the capabilities of the turbochargers are fully utilised. The use of an electronic variable valve timing intake system ensures optimum response by adjusting the intake valve timing on the fly to achieve excellent throttle response and fuel efficiency across a variety of driving conditions

The goal was to design the best Z yet, with more than just power and agility, but a vehicle that is one with the driver for all kinds of on-road adventures. One of the defining characteristics of the Z has always been its bond between the car and driver and that human-machine bond has been retained in the presence of the standard six-speed manual transmission. This close ratio transmission glides to the next gear, almost instinctively, with minimal effort and is mated to an Exedy high-performance clutch.

A quick-shifting nine-speed automatic gearbox is also available complete with aluminium paddle shifters.

Both the manual and automatic models are equipped with an advanced launch control system as well as a mechanical clutch-type limited slip differential.

A bespoke handling package

A multi-pronged approach was adopted to ensure predictable yet responsive handling. Enhanced body rigidity, an electronic power steering with rack assist and a strong mechanical feel as well as wider front tyres ensure a planted yet playful sport scar.

The front double-wishbone aluminium suspension features new geometry, including increased caster angle for improved straight-line stability and a two point front strut tower brace as standard. The rear independent multi-link aluminium suspension remains mostly unchanged apart from reconfigured damper settings

Responsive braking is provided thanks to four wheel ventilated disc brakes. Z Sport models are fitted with dark-painted 18-inch aluminium-alloy wheels with Yokohama ADVAN Sport high performance tyres. Z performance models are fitted with extremely lightweight 19-inch RAYS rims wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza S007 high performance tyres.

Model line up

It is yet to be confirmed which models will be making their way to South Africa and when. In international markets the 2021 Z will be offered in Sport and Performance grades with a couple of specification differences.
